London was never quite large enough for me. Not after the things I’dseen, the things I’d done. Most people can get lost in a worldlike that but not me. My face became…toowell-known. Is it any wonder then that I took to exploring the world searchingfor things to interest me? I started small at first. Short breaks, just off thecontinent, that sort of thing. Then I went further afield, found myself inAsia, shortly after the war, looking for an escape.

My route to Singapore had been unusual. I wasfollowing one of the routes that Thomas Raffles had taken when establishing theplace as a colony. It was a hobby of mine, to trace the routes of otherexplorers over the years, to ape them for my own misguided amusement. I oncedogged the horse-steps of Berkin Wills across Australia for example, though Inever did solve the mystery of their disappearance. Then there was Francisco deOrellana’s trip down the Amazon, still no idea what happened to him. And ofcourse there was the time I followed the path of Irving and Mallory. I clearlyhave an obsession with dead people lacking a funeral.

As for Singapore, well, that was part ofanother grand plan. I’d hoped to head out to Australia, charter a boat and,sail out to the South Pacific, see if I couldn’t solve the Joyita mysterybefore anyone else laid claim to it. Of course the problem with a good mysteryis, you never know when you’ll find one.

Or rather, someone who believed Ishould see her. It was my sister Isadora, a girl I’d not seen in years. A girlI’d long forgotten, truth be told. Seven decades must have passed since I’dlast seen her. And the ravages of time had taken their toll…on her if not onme.

Dora was the last of my family, at least of those I knew. And I had beenthe one to steal her from this world. It was perhaps fitting that our paths hadcrossed one last time. Loose ends are a terrible thing. Besides, I always didindulge my baby sister. I found a lead chest the day after, one of thosemilitary ones that were forever being used in Singapore. I placed Dora’s bodywithin it, the three dragons trapped inside her.

And I travelled back to Paris, to the scene of my great betrayal, andironically, the start of her own greatness.

I had the chest buried on the right of the Seine, near Les Hallese Havre,facing towards the Eiffel tower. I’ve paid a significant amount of moneyto ensure that it was buried a long, long, long way down. Out of sight and outof mind.

The Parisians were easily bribed, but I couldn't criticize. They wereturning a blind eye to exactly what it was they were burying, after all.
